Calligraphy

Art of writing is known as calligraphy. Calligraphy is an art which anyone can take it up as a hobby. A pen and a paper is all you need to do calligraphy. Calligraphy can be lot of fun and enjoyed by old and aged. Today with use of computers in our everyday life, calligraphy as an art is almost forgotten. However, it continues to flourish in wedding and event invitations, original hand lettered logo design, religious art, graphic design, cut stone inscriptions and memorial documents.

History of calligraphy

The history of calligraphy is a long one. The 26 letters that we use in English language have undergone many changes over centuries. Many of the letters have originated with Egyptian hieroglyphics. For example, letter "A" was pictured as an ox in hieroglyphics. For calligraphers, the important period of calligraphy was the Roman through the Renaissance period. The major alphabets from that time span (in chronological order) are: Roman, uncial, blackletter, italic, and bookhand. Each of these has several variations, and it is from these five alphabets that most of the modern type-faces or fonts are derived.
